Individual and Classroom Educational Programs

Our classrooms offer four teams that are designed to provide the appropriate level of instruction for a student based upon their Initial Assessment.  Each student’s program is designed using the ABLLS as a curriculum guide, a Functional Behavioral Assessment for behaviors to be reduced, and parent involvement that leads to a comprehensive daily program.  The program is then implemented in the classroom and monitored by Teachers, Team Leaders, and Program Managers.

Team One and Team Two

Team One and Team Two students are early learners.  These children are at the beginning of their language and learning careers.  The team emphasis is on building cooperation and receptive skills, choosing a response form, beginning manding or requesting, beginning tacting or labeling, some simple intraverbals or conversational skills, the beginning of social interaction skills, and NET/play activities chosen by the student.  Students in this team are typically taught using 1:1 and 2:1 instruction most of the day.

Team Three

Team Three students are intermediate learners. These children are at a level of language and learning skills that is beyond those skills of children in Team One and Two.  The team emphasis is on continued cooperation with other people and complex receptive behavior, more complex mands including manding or requesting for information, complex labeling and conversation skills, NET activities that approximate typical age peers, social interaction with other students, group instruction opportunities, and academics.  Students in this team are taught using a variety of 1:1 instruction and small group instruction.

Team Four

Team Four students are advanced learners and have more language skills than students in Teams One, Two, and Three.  These are the students who need to move away from only having the 1:1 instruction all day long but are not quite ready to be in a classroom with 10 to 15 students.  The emphasis is placed on more pre-academic and academic skills and the language associated with those skills.  Team Four is a classroom environment with a 2:1 student to teacher ratio.

Communication Clinic

The Communication Clinic offers the same curriculum as The Jericho School at an hourly therapy basis.  The Clinic is for those students and families who wish to access this therapy for one to three hours per day only.  The Clinic is designed to work with children who have a communication delay and:

  • Appear frustrated or tantrum because they cannot communicate.
  • Cannot imitate sounds and words.
  • Do not spontaneously request many items and activities each day.
  • Can label many things but does not talk about them when the
    item is not present.
  • Cannot carry on conversations with others.

The Clinic offers programs for children in the Jacksonville Area that include the following:

  • A comprehensive Assessment of Basic Language
    and Learner Skills (ABLLS).
  • A written individualized plan of goals and objectives developed by the instructional team which includes the child’s parents.
  • A comprehensive program of instruction delivered in a 1:1 teaching format in the Jericho Communication Clinic.

Instructional Concepts

After decades of research, the United States Surgeon General has endorsed intensive behavior intervention for individuals with autism and other developmental delays. Over 30 years of research documents the effectiveness of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in reducing the inappropriate behavior and in increasing communication, learning and appropriate social behavior.

Individualized Programs

Students at The Jericho School receive individualized, comprehensive education in an optimal student-to-teacher environment. Each student receives one-to-one or two-to-one instruction throughout the day as well as opportunities for learning in small groups.

Instructor Training

The Jericho School recruits teachers with a bachelors degree, preferably in education and/or psychology. New teachers are paired with one of our more experienced teachers who will serve as a mentor. The training program begins with didactic material covering Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Verbal Behavior (VB) and proven teaching techniques. The initial training is a three-week program. The Jericho School also schedules monthly in-service days to ensure ongoing teacher development.
